Orphic Theogonies Summary

At first there was only water and mud. Out of these emerged the god Time (Chronos). He had the body of a snake with the heads of a bull, a lion, and a man.

He produced an egg and, when it was complete, he wound round it until the pressure cracked it open. When the egg broke open, the top half became the sky and the bottom half became the earth.

Out of the egg came Phanes, who ruled the universe and made many of the parts of it. He had a human body, but also had animal heads attached to his sides. When he was tired, Phanes made his daughter, Night, queen of the universe.

Over time many of the gods were born, and one of the youngest, Zeus, wanted to be king. In order to gain the power to create parts of the universe Zeus ate Phanes and absorbed his powers.

He then ruled the universe for many years. Others were jealous, including a group called the Titans. To punish Zeus, they captured one of his sons, Dionysus, and ate him. Zeus found out what they were doing and blasted them all into ash with his thunderbolt.

The Titans hadn’t finished what they were doing, so Dionysus’ heart was left. Zeus brought him back to life from his heart.

He then used the ashes of the Titans to make humans, so we are part god and part Titan.
